Emery Mikel Helps NYC Clients Find the Support they Need Through Creative Arts Therapy

By Psychology Arts

Emery and the Water & Stone team help clients of all ages and backgrounds find the support that best meets their needs through a contemplative approach to creative arts therapy. Their goal is to create a space where people can come for all types/levels of support while not having to search high and low for the right therapist, not feeling constrained by finances, and having the flexibility to find their path to mental wellness and a more balanced life.

What do you do? Who do you help?

I started Water & Stone, so people can find the support they are looking for without having to scour the entire city for the right fit in a therapist. Whether a professional woman looking for help with anxiety, someone dealing with loss and grief, or a parent seeking support for a child, we can offer options among our 12 therapists and find something that fits most schedules, budgets, and areas of interest. Some of the areas our therapists specialize in include Postpartum Issues, Stress Relief, Adolescent Grief, Multiculturalism, Third Culture Kids, LGBTQIA+, Microaggressions, Anxiety, Life Transitions, Confidence Building, Finding Your Voice, and much more.

What is a good course, website or book you would recommend and why?

Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life

By Jon Kabat-Zinn

This was a textbook when I was in grad school (Naropa University) and I have returned to it again and again. It's chapters are short and stand alone, with each holding a great deal to ponder. Especially in today's very busy world, I find it helpful and poignant.

What makes your practice unique?

We are a practice of 12 women working from a contemplative, humanistic, and mindful approach to therapy and wellness. While we fit together under the umbrella of Water & Stone, each therapist is unique in many ways and we are very proud of the diversity we bring to the practice on multiple levels.

What advice would you give to other creative arts therapists?

Trust that being yourself makes you unique and is enough when it comes to developing your professional identity as a creative arts therapist. Also, community makes you stronger, so find people who support your vision and endeavors!

What is your self-care routine?

Setting limits on everything from answering emails, looking at social media, and the hours a day I work has been extremely important since I founded Water & Stone. Along with setting limits, I have made it a priority to include regular exercise, meditation, and occasional things like acupuncture, archery, high flying trapeze, etc. to keep my curiosity active and my focus in life on more than just "work".

List the products or items that are indispensable in your life.

My journal, Staedtler Triplus Fineliner pens, my banjo, a multitude of plants in my apartment & office, and my throwing knives (given to me by my Kung Fu teacher years ago. Only to be thrown at targets!).

Who influences your work and why?

Anyone who has started something with a mission in mind that brings joy, curiosity, support, etc. into others' lives.

I find a lot of inspiration in people such as the Obamas, Emma Watson, Rhett & Link, Patch Adams, Lucille Ball, and many more who are well known or even famous. I also love reading about people who aren't well known, but are doing inspiring things like thru hiking the Appalachian trail (Barefoot Sisters), starting community art studios locally/internationally (Naropa University - Art Therapy), or making a difference in amazing ways (New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care). Reading about people making a difference pushes me to keep doing the same in my own way.
